About Dickinson State University

In the heart of southwestern North Dakota, on the edge of the breathtaking badlands, in the center of a thriving community sits Dickinson State University, an institution of higher learning that has grown in numbers and vision since it opened as a state normal school nearly nine decades ago.

DSU SignThe institution has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1918—in rented space at a downtown Dickinson building—training desperately-needed teachers for the state’s fledging public education system. Although the school had no land to call a campus or buildings to house classrooms, Dickinson State Normal School graduated its first class of 18 teachers in 1920.

Fast forward 80-odd years and one finds Dickinson State University, one of 11 institutions of higher learning in the North Dakota University System. The student population now stands at nearly 2,600, the staff and faculty at over 200 and the campus buildings at more than 20. DSU has enjoyed steady enrollment growth for the past 11 years.

Although these increases are impressive, what is most striking about DSU is the forward-thinking spirit that drives the university’s commitment to meet the needs of its students. By embracing change in the regional and world economy and utilizing the phenomenal strides in technology, DSU continues to foster the growth of its students, the region, and the state, emphasizing its mission of “contributing to the intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development of the region it serves.”
